According to "The Knot" about 45% of the engaged couples go "over" their wedding day budget and 26% of the couples stayed "within" their wedding day budgets.
So, why do so many couples go over their wedding day budget? Because they underestimated what things or services will cost or they purchased items or services they did not include in their original budget.
Here's a perfect example of how a couples goes "over budget" . . originally a Bride planned on having only one attendant, a Maid of Honor. Well, that did not please the Bride's Mother or the Groom's Mother. So, instead of ordering two bouquets, one for the Bride and one for her honor attendant, she had to order six more bridesmaids' bouquets plus additional dinners and "Thank You" gifts.

The chose a secluded camping site next to a stream for their wedding ceremony followed by a lake setting outdoor reception. The couple honeymooned in the Grand Canyon area.

According to "The Knot" the average length of a couple's engagement period is fourteen months.
I once knew of a man who proposed on a Tuesday evening and they were married the following Saturday night.
I know of a couple who became engaged about ten years ago . . and in that time period they have traveled extensively and purchased a second home together. And they still haven't set a wedding date.

How does a Chinese couple determine their wedding date?
In Chinese culture, there are auspicious dates that are ideal for a wedding ceremony to take place on. The Bride and Groom will consult with an authority on the subject, which can include a Chinese monk, a temple official, a fortune teller or simply looking at a Chinese calendar for a lucky date. Usually dates that are even-numbered are preferred.

What is a Australian Unity Bowl?
The custom of having a "Unity Bowl" can be seen at weddings. The purpose of this bowl is to have all family members fill it with colorful stones to signify that each person has contributed to coloring the lives of the newlyweds. Each family member is represented by a particular color or colors and when the newly married couple mixes the bowl, a new family is formed with the beautiful mosaic of color that is created from the multi-colored stones. What a great wedding keepsake!

What does 3 3 9 times means in Japanese weddings?
Traditionally, wedding sin Japan take place in Shinto shrines, whee the Bride and Groom partake in a sake-drinking ritual called san-san-ku-do. This ancient tradition translates as "three-three-nine-times," where couples drink from three different-sized cups three times each.
Odd numbers in Japan are considered lucky, especially the number three. The smallest cup represents heaven, the middle represents earth, and the largest represents mankind.

One of the Ten Things Every Guest Wants at Your Wedding
A little time with the Bride and Groom . . Yes!
A friend of mine went to a wedding recently. When they got to the reception, they discovered that three large banquet rooms were needed for the 400+ invited guests. My friend and her husband only saw the Bride and Groom from a distance. The newlyweds did not have a receiving line and they only visited with friends and relatives who were positioned close to their head table. If you wanted to see the Bride and Groom "up close and personal", you had to watch a television screen in the other two banquet rooms.

One of Ten Things Every Guest Wants at Your Wedding
Knowing what to do next . . for sure!
I will never forget a Bride and Groom who I worked with years ago who were so secretive about their plans immediately after the ceremony that they left their guests wondering if, and when, the newlyweds were going to return.
Unbeknownst to me, the Bride and Groom arranged for a long carriage ride immediately after the ceremony. The Bride and Groom were gone for over an hour and surprise, surprise upon the Bride and Groom's return a lot of the guests were drunk or missing (and many paid for dinners were not consumed).
I always make it a point to ask the Bride and Groom what their plans are immediately after the ceremony so an announcement or an explanation can be made to their guests. Your friends and loved ones should not wonder what to do next. Either state the Bride and Groom' schedule on the Ceremony Program or ask someone to make an announcement.

One of the Ten Things Every Guest Wants at Your Wedding
Interesting conversation at dinner . . yes!
I'm a firm believe in mixing up table assignments. For a couple of hours, it's OK for a husband and wife to sit at two different tables. For a couple of hours, it's OK to enjoy the company of seven people you have never met before. When you put eight "total strangers" at the same table, everyone is on their "best behavior" which makes for a very pleasant evening and interesting conversation.

A short ceremony . . Absolutely!
There's a happy medium between these two stories . .
A Bride and Groom wanted " a five minute or less ceremony". Why? Because sharing a case of champagne with their friends was much more important to them. The Bride's Mother and Father paid over $5000 for a bridal gown that was only worn during the ceremony.
Another Bride and Groom's ceremony was so long that both the Flower Girl and the Ring Bearer fell asleep plus several of the guests dozed off. And how long was that ceremony? Over two hours.
When a ceremony is over thirty minutes long . . it's too long!

One of the Ten Things Every Guests Wants at Your Wedding
A peaceful atmosphere . . Absolutely!
If you or one of your parents or one of your guest have to tell the band leader or the DJ to "turn down the volume" because you can't carry on a conversation with the person next to you then you are not providing a peaceful atmosphere.
I will never forget a recent Bride and Groom decided not to have a band or DJ at their wedding and her parents were quite upset because the Bride's parents like to dance and party. The Bride and Groom considered themselves poor dancers and they thought it was much more important to talk to people they have not seen in several months or years rather than do something they did not enjoy.
And so, the parents brought a CD player and some music which they set up at the far end of the banquet room for those people who like to dance.

Free Alcoholic Beverages Definitely!
I will never forget a Groom asking me years ago, "How do we put bring your own beer to the reception on our wedding invitation because we don't drink and we're not buying beer for other people to drink."
Your guests should not have to supply their own beverages. They don't have to bring their own silverware and they don't have to bring their own dessert so they should not be expected to bring or pay for their own beverages. If you choose not to have alcoholic beverages at your event, that's your decision, and your guests should accept that decision. Pass the word to your friends and family members before your wedding date that your reception is going to be "alcohol free".
And for those of you who think it's OK to have "a cash bar" the answer is "it is not OK."

What every Guests Wants At Your Wedding . .
Convenient, reasonable priced accommodations. True!
I once worked with a Bride and Groom who booked their wedding at a resort on a holiday weekend about five hundred miles from their hometown. They thought they were doing their friends and relatives a favor. Well, surprise, surprise! The resort put a three night minimum on each booking because it was the 4th of July weekend plus the nighlty rate increased due to the holiday. The Bride and Groom had so many wedding invitation "declines" that the size of the wedding cake had to be decreased dramatically and the large banquet room reserved for their reception had to be changed to a smaller banquet room. The Bride and Groom invited 230 guests, only 80 attended the wedding and reception.

There's two sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth.
Just recently I was told my a recent bride had unhappy she was with the wedding cake that was delivered to her reception. And this bride told everyone who would hear her about her unhappiness.
Now, I am very familiar with the owner of this wedding cake bakery so I found the bride's story about her wedding cake very disturbing.
What the bride failed to tell all those who would hear her was that she changed the cake flavor and/or the icing flavor and/or the icing color and/or the style of the cake and/or the number of slices needed and/or the decorations at least six times in a two month period. And how do I know that? Because the wedding cake baker showed me her notes associated with this cake order. And here's where the problems began . . the bride never walked into the store to talk to the cake baker even though she was encouraged to do so when she first ordered the cake and when she made every change. The bride lived within a thirty minute drive of the bakery.
So, before you give a service provider a negative review on one of the many wedding vendor websites think about your participation (or lack of participation) in the final product.

Question from a couple who plan to get married . .
"Do we have to repeat or say the same vows?"
Response: No, you do not. When a Justice of the Peace or a Judge conducts a civil or secular ceremony the same vows are usually stated by both participants. When a priest or a minister conducts a traditional Christian or Catholic ceremony, the same vows are stated by both participants. If a couples wishes to create their own wedding vows they need to find an officiant who is liberal and encourages the participants' creativity.

Did you just get engaged?
If you were given a unique shaped engagement ring,
you have several wedding band choices. You can have a band custom made to compliment the shape of the engagement ring OR
you can use the engagement ring as both an engagement ring
and a wedding band OR wear the engagement ring on the right hand and a completely different style of wedding band on the left hand.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no definite time in months or years
for the engagement period.
I know of one couple who got engaged on a Tuesday night and they were married on Saturday night of the same week.

Did you just get engaged?
If you wish to announce your engagement at either a dinner or party then it should be done within four to six weeks of the proposal.
Traditionally, the lady's parents host the engagement party or dinner. And if the lady's parents are not able to host this event then the man's parents can host this party or dinner. This event can be as small or as large as the host and hostess want it to be.

Have you ever heard the phrase . . "There's a time and place for everything".
Well, I'm not sure there is any appropriate place for wedding gowns that are front less, backless, or looks like something that should be worn on a honeymoon not down the aisle. On more than once occasion, I said to myself, "What was she thinking when she bought that dress." So, when you go bridal gown shopping think "class" . . think "feminine" not street walker.

Please consider donating to a charity or non-profit organization or a favorite cause in lieu of purchasing favors for your wedding reception. No one needs to know how much or when you make the donation, just make a small sign telling your guests that you are going to make a donation to XYZ charity and put that sign on the guest book table or gift table or in your ceremony program.

Are you planning a wedding?
When trying to decide if you want a buffet dinner versus a sit-down dinner, I recommend choosing a sit-down dinner. Why? Because people spend a lot of money on gowns, tuxedos and party dresses so why would you want to take a chance that food may be spilled on your guests and wedding party members walking to and from the buffet tables plus a buffet is based on quantity and a sit-down dinner is based on quality.

Question from a Bride and Groom . .
Question . .
We are getting married at 9AM on Valentine's Day. We have invited about thirty people to our ceremony. We are leaving immediately after the ceremony for the airport because we are meeting old friends in Las Vegas that evening. Can my parents have a wedding reception without us?
Response . .
Your parents can host a party but I wouldn't call in a wedding reception or treat it like a wedding reception if the Bride and Groom aren't coming. I also think the guests should be informed that this is not a wedding reception, it is a "after the wedding ceremony breakfast or brunch" and the newlyweds will not be there.

If you just decided to get married on Saturday, February 14, 2015 then you probably will have difficulty finding a venue or caterer or banquet hall at this late date. But, do not despair, if you change your ceremony and reception hour from 4 or 5 or 6PM to 11AM or Noon or 1PM, you will have a much easier time contracting a ceremony officiant and/or a
reception hall or caterer. And, here's the best part, the cost of a
breakfast or brunch or lunch reception is far less than a three or five
course dinner reception, especially on a Saturday night that just happens to be St Valentine's Day.

Question from a Bride and Groom . .
We just decided to get married on Valentine's Day. Is it OK to invite our friends and families to the wedding by E-mail or call them on the phone? We don't have time to order invitations.
Response . .
If most of your friends live in the US, then you have enough time to hand write a simple invitation on white or ivory note paper and mail it by the end of this week. If your friends or loved ones live outside of the US, it is doubtful that they will attend your wedding on such notice, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't send them an written invitation. Call them or E-mail them now and then send them a hand written invitation. A handwritten invitation shows sincerity.

what season or time of the year do I want to get married
where do I want to get married
and what can I (or my family) afford, the all important budget.
