A lot of people assume it is less expensive to get married "at home" than at a hotel or a resort or in a community center.  Not true . .

Whether you have fifteen guests or 115 guests you still need to provide shelter for them (a tent or canopy), restrooms for them (do you really want 115 people to use your household bathrooms?) , plus food and beverages for them (the host and hostess are responsible for the chicken salad platters and the lemonade).

So, before you absolutely, positively decide not to get married at the local banquet center think about all the items you are going to have to rent or borrow for your "at home" ceremony and/or reception . .

Tables and chairs . . dishes . . glassware . . serving platters . . porta potties . . serving utensils . . ice and ice chests . .  air conditioning or heat . . cookware . . linens . . and a decorated archway or trellis for the ceremony.

Many beauty salons or day spas have Wedding Day Specials and/or Packages.  Some hairdressers will even come to your home or dressing location the day of your wedding.  If your hairdresser(s) does not charge a travel fee then you should give a gratuity of at least 20% to cover their travel costs and personal attention.

Having a manicure and have your make-up applied professionally is just as important as having your hair styled on your wedding day, and this applies not only to the Bride, but, also, the attendants . . the flower girl and the Bride and Groom's Mothers.  When everyone is "all dressed up" the photographs just look better.

When visiting a mens formal wear store or department make sure the person who is helping you is knowledgeable in mens formal attire.

Ask the store employee the following questions . . 

What does a four-in-hand-tie looks like?

What should the men in the wedding party wear at a 11AM formal wedding in the fall or winter?

Ask them to show you the difference between a budget tuxedo and a custom made tuxedo.

Ask them what the term "black tie preferred" means on a invitation.

Always . . always . . always try on the tuxedo and shoes before you and your friends leave the formal menswear store and make sure all the items you need (studs and/or cufflinks and/or tie) are there before you walk out the door.

I personally know of a wedding party that had every bow tie missing, and they were twenty miles away, when they discovered the missing items.  Not only was the discovery made thirty minutes before the ceremony began, it was also after the store closed.

Many mens formal wear stores or tuxedo shops have "a free tuxedo for the groom" or some type of monetary discount if a certain number of tuxedos are rented by the wedding party.  If you don't see something advertised when you walk into the store, ask if they do have a rental discount.

Also, the employees of the mens  formal wear  shop should be competent and knowledgeable about what attire should be worn during a particular season and the time of day (morning, afternoon and evening).

Is it OK to return items that were listed on our bridal registry and turn them into cash before our wedding day?

Response . .

Every store has a gift return policy.  I'm not sure that returning a gift will guarantee you cash in return, don't be surprised if you are given a store credit rather than cash.  You also need to think about how you will respond to the gift giver if they ask you why you returned their shower or wedding gift before your wedding day.
