How do we get our guests to dress appropriately for our cocktail party reception at 9PM?
Response . .
Use the terms "Cocktail Attire" or "Festive Attire" means that the ladies are expected to wear a cocktail or dressy dress and the men are expected to wear a sports coat or a jacket with a tie and nice trousers. The ladies should also wear lower or comfortable heels because they probably will be standing or dancing a lot.
Many cocktail receptions do not provide seating and tables for all of the guests.

Could you plan a wedding in a week? Would buying an "off the rack gown" that fit you be satisfactory? Could you make a lot of menu. decorating and vendor decisions quickly? I know of a couple who started planning their wedding on a Wednesday and got married on Saturday.

The weather, especially, if your ceremony and/or reception will take place in the great outdoors. Think thunder, lighting, a blizzard or a hurricane.
A missing vendor or a no-show vendor.
A problem that can not be resolved quickly. It's hard to replace a wedding cake that is dropped by mistake as it is being moved from the hotel travel cart to the display table.
Formal attire and nice jewelry. Yes, a wedding ring or a tuxedo can be lost, stolen or damaged.

One of the easiest, most efficient, and least expensive receptions that a Bride and Groom can host is a "bubbly and desserts" reception. This type of reception can be held after lunch and before dinner (3PM) or after dinner (730PM - 10PM).
The bubbly can be as simple as lemon-lime soda or ginger ale or carbonated cider . . and the dessert can be as simple as an assortment of homemade cookies or small fruit tarts from the bakery.
