The parents of the Bride To Be should host the engagement party or dinner or open house, and if the lady's Mother and/or Father cannot host this event then it is totally acceptable for the Groom To Be's parents to host an engagement party or dinner or open house.
An engagement party can be as simple as backyard barbecue on a Sunday afternoon with the immediate family members invited to a formal dinner for one hundred guests in a hotel on a Saturday evening.
