Question . . What is "Common Law Marriage" and are there states that recognize "Common Law Marriage"?

Common Law Marriage is a LEGAL concept that applies to couples who are in a relationship that has the appearance of a marriage, but hasn't formally sanctioned by the state (such a the issuance of a Certificate of Marriage).  A valid common law marriage typically confers both the benefits and obligations of a formal marriage.

Courts most often apply the rules of common law marriage in situations where one partner dies without a will and the other claims there was a common law marriage so as to inherit property under interstate succession lawns.  These laws automatically give a share of the property to a spouse, but may not recognize an unmarried partner.

Which States Recognize Common Law Marriage Now?
