Contrary to popular belief you do not have to have a diamond ring to be "engaged".

Sometimes the lady prefers a different type of stone or a different style of ring or they decide not to have an "engagement ring" at all.

When someone says to you, "Will you marry me?" that is the proposal of marriage.
And now you are "engaged" to be married.
