How would you react if you received an invitation to a wedding via a telephone call or an E-mail?

The Bride claims she is doing this because she wants a "green" (avoid using paper) wedding but she is also known for being "very cheap."

A wedding invitation is the guests' first indication of what to expect at the ceremony and/or reception which means this may be "a bring your own soda and sandwich" reception.

The tradition of not to see each other (the Bride and Groom) before the ceremony . .

The tradition of "hiding" the Bride from the Groom, prior to the wedding comes from the days of arranged marriages when a wedding was merely a business deal between Fathers.  Thing like love and attraction on the part of the Bride and Groom had nothing to do with it.  The Groom saw the Bride, for the first time, when she walked down the aisle and a veil covered her face.  After the minister pronounced them man and wife, the Groom then lifted the veil, not only to kiss the Bride, but also to see the face he would be waking up to for the rest of his life.

Question from a Bride and Groom. .

We are thinking about taking a cruise to Bermuda.  We would like to be married in Bermuda. What is the best time to go to Bermuda?

Answer . . The best time to go is from the beginning of April through the end of October.  The peak time is June and July.  And if you plan on getting married in Bermuda, then you should be familiar with the pre-marital requirements.

Bermuda Marriage Requirements

The information below outlines the marriage requirements for getting married in Bermuda

Visitors who wish to come to Bermuda to be married must File a 'Notice of Intended Marriage' form with the Bermuda Government's Registrar General. It is wise to to this four weeks before your wedding. This form must be accompanied by a fee of $210, plus $21 for your marriage certificate in the form of a cashiers cheque or bank draft (Bermuda or US dollars) made payable to the Accountant General, Hamilton Bermuda. Copies of final divorce decrees must accompany this form if either the bride or groom has been divorced.

The "Notice of Intended Marriage" is published in the two Bermuda newspapers and parties to the intended marriage are not required to be resident during this time. If no objection to the marriage is raised the Registrar General may issue a licence to marry 15 days from the date of receipt of the 'Notice' and this license is valid for three months.

Only those British subjects resident in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who intend to marry a British subject resident in Bermuda, and for whom banns are called in their normal place of worship in the United Kingdom, can also have their banns called in the church where the marriage is intended to take place.

No blood tests or health certificates are required.

Notice of Intended Marriage forms are available from Tourism offices international and from Registrar General in Bermuda. Notice may be given by either of the parties personally or by mail.

Why can't the Best Man be married?

The term "Best Man" does not seem to have come into common usage until late in the nineteenth century.  Thomas Jefferson (1872) used the term "groomsman" and described his duties as being very similar to those of the present-day Best Man.  He was expected to be a close friend of the groom and UNMARRIED.  Charles Dickens asked his publisher, John Macrone, to be his Best Man at his wedding but had to withdraw the invitation on the insistence of his Bride-to-be because Macrone was married.

Question from a Bride . .
We are having a destination wedding.  What flowers are always kept "on hand" at a florist shop just in case I do not get the opportunity to order my bouquet in advance.

Response . .
Most florists get deliveries from their wholesalers two or three times a week so if there is a particular flower that you want you still may be able to get it.  Here's a list of the flowers that a florist would usually keep "in stock" . .
Roses . . amaryllis . . lilies . . orchids . . anthurium . . calla lilies . . gardenias . . camellias . . gerbera . . daffodils . . tulips . . iris . . sunflowers . . peony . . chrysanthemums (in several shapes, colors, and sizes) and carnations.

Thinking about getting married this weekend?  Monday, January 23 is Chinese New Year which means you already have a theme, the color is red, and it can be organized very quickly.  Celebrate your marriage by going to an oriental restaurant that has white tablecloths and a Chinese New Year parade.  Let the celebration of your marriage and the new year be a sign of good things to come.  And keep in mind there will ALWAYS be fireworks on your anniversary.

Signing a contract or written agreement . .

Contracts can be confusing at best - at worst they're an overwhelming jumble of jargon.  But a service contract with a caterer, reception hall, florist or whomever, is meant to protect YOUR rights as much as the vendor or service provider.

Don't agree to a contract that is too vague.  Lack of specificity leaves room for vendors to make changes or tack on extra costs.

Ask questions!  And if you feel something has been left out, have the vendor write it in; both parties should initial the change.

Don't be pressured into signing on the spot.

Have a third party give it a glance.  A wedding consultant or an attorney is ideal.

Keep in touch after you've signed and put down a deposit.

Why throw rice at the newlyweds?

zIt is thought to have come from the Orient, where rice is a household symbol that signifies a full pantry.  While nearly all cultures have showered the wedding couple with symbolic food to ensure fertility, for many years it was rice that ws used in America.  Today, however, this is considered dangerous as someone could slip and fall when walking on the grains.

Consider blowing bubbles or throwing birdseed or confetti as an alternative.

At approximately 1220AM on Saturday, December 31, 2011, I received a phone call from a couple who wanted to get married "immediately."  I would have been happy to unite this couple in matrimony at that hour but you cannot get married in the State of Florida without a Marriage License.

Let's welcome the new year with a big HIP HIP HOORAY for 2012!
