Why a Wedding Cake?

The tradition of the wedding cake has ancient roots.  The Roman wedding ceremony included a simple cake made from salt, water and wheat flour.  The cake custom may also be connected to the fertility rituals of many cultures.  One custom, similar to that of throwing confetti, involved showering the Bride with many small cakes after the wedding.  Sometimes the cakes were even broken over the Bride's head.  Elaborately decorated wedding cakes date from Victorian times.  The Bride and Groom feed each other a taste of cake to symbolize the sharing of life's bounty.
