Relationships . . of all kinds . . are like sand held in your hand.  Held loosely, with an open hand, the sand remains where it is.  The minute you close your hand and squeeze tightly to hold on, the sand trickles through your fingers.  You may hold onto some of it, but most will be spilled.    A relationship is like that.  Held loosely, with respect and freedom for the other person, is likely to remain intact.  But hold too tightly, too
possessively, and the relationship slips away and is lost.  Kaleel Jamison

Scenario . . Bride was unemployed due to a recent layoff (the end of December).  The Bride found out she was pregnant in January.  A BIG wedding was planned for the end of the year (October).  The Bride and Groom went to another state to get married secretly so the Bride could qualify for her husband's health insurance.

What would you do?  Move the BIG wedding up?  Cancel the BIG wedding?  Keep the out-of-state wedding a secret as long as possible?

A Native American Style Wedding ceremony is one that takes place outdoors, with Father Sky as the roof of the most sacred cathedral, and Mother Earth at your feet to hold you, and the trees and plants to surround and embrace you.  The circle will be saged by the Minister.

A wedding basket is exchanged between the Bride and the Groom during the ceremony.  A wedding basket is lined with cedar and covered with a red cloth.  The wedding basket contains whatever is symbolically important to the couple.  The items in the baskets can range from ears of corn to a branch of cedar.

When the Bride  hands the Groom her basket she will say, "I provide these things to my Husband and home.  They are a symbol that I will care for you and love you always."

When the Groom hands the Bride his basket he will say, "I provide these things to my Wife.  They are a symbol that I will provide love to you and protect our family always."

Question from a Bride and Groom . .

We have been very fortunate in life.  We do not need or want another toaster.  In lieu of bridal shower and wedding gifts we would prefer helping others.  Is there an easy way to do that?

Answer . .

Here's a gift with a purpose:  Charity Choice cards let the recipient (you, the Bride and Groom) select a beneficiary (ies) from over 250 National and Global Charities including the American Red Cross and Susan G Komen Cancer Awareness.

The Bride and Groom were given a $10,000 budget for their wedding by her parents.  The Bride bought a $5000 bridal gown which only leaves $5000 to rent, contract, or purchase everything else for the wedding.  Do you think this Bride was being selfish in using half of the budget for her bridal gown?

Irish wedding traditions are all about bringing good luck.  Whatever your ethnicity, take a chance on these customs . . .

Marry on the last day of the old year (December 31), so that you wake up to a fresh life together in a new year.

Ring a small bell just after your vows.  Keep it in your household as a constant reminder of your promises to each other.

Carry a horseshoe in your bouquet.  Since a real one would be too weighty, use a miniature horseshoes (try a charm from lollysmith.com).

Shower coins on your guests, who can throw them over a cliff or into a lake for luck.  For landlocked parties, use a fountain.

Queen Victoria is believed to have started the tradition of including ivy in the bridal bouquet.  After  the wedding, the sprigs can be carefully rooted and planted as a living reminder of your bouquet.  Green thumb Mothers in Queen Victoria's day would nurture the ivy so cuttings from the ivy could be put in their daughter's bridal bouquet.

Question from a Bride and Groom . .

My Mother passed away and his Father passed away.  Can we or should include those deceased parents on our wedding invitation?

Response . .

The invitation should only be extended by those who are hosting the wedding (or event).  It's better to mention their names in the ceremony program or with a memorial candle placed in the background.  It is appropriate to mention their names in a newspaper engagement or wedding announcement, it is NOT appropriate to mention their names on any type of invitation.

How to "Walk Down the Aisle"

Even if your heart is racing, you want to be a vision of calm when you walk the walk.  The classic step-touch, step-touch technique can look mechanical, but you'll need a device that will force you to walk slowly (nerves cause many brides to rush up the aisle).  At your rehearsal, count the number of steps to the altar; on your wedding day, count off this number to yourself as you walk.  Practice at home wearing your shoes and gown (on a clean floor), so you can get used to the weight of the dress while breaking in the heels (rough up the new slippery soles with sandpaper or a cement sidewalk).  Balancing a book on your head works:  it keeps you back straight and your shoulders hunch-free.

A Bride and Groom want to know . .

What is a Reaffirmation of Marriage?

Response . .

When a couple is married in a civil (non-religious) ceremony and then later seeks a religious blessing of their marriage.  While reaffirming your marriage is a time for celebration, it is NOT a wedding.  Most couples limit the guest list to a their immediate family and a few close friends.  It is appropriate to have a party or dinner afterwards but this event should not resemble a wedding or wedding reception.  Your guests can be invited to this event either by printed invitations or handwritten invitations or by telephone.  The Husband should wear a suit and the Wife should wear a nice dress, wedding attire should not be worn.

Question . .

What will happen if we do not obtain our Marriage License in time for our wedding day?

Response . .

Your officiant should inform you of when and where to obtain your Marriage License but it is your, the Bride and Groom, responsibility to apply for it within the required time period.  If you do not have a VALID Marriage License on your wedding day your officiant has the option of doing two things . .

He or she can refuse to conduct any ceremony.  And they, the officiant, can also insist on being compensated for at least fifty percent of their fee because they met their contractual obligation by preparing the ceremony and coming to the ceremony site.

He or she can conduct a commitment ceremony.  In a commitment ceremony the words husband, wife, and marriage are eliminated.  If the officiant decides to conduct a commitment ceremony, he or she must inform the guests that the ceremony that they are about to witness is not a legal marriage ceremony and that the couple will not be legally married at the end of the ceremony.  It is illegal to conduct a mock ceremony in Florida.
